“The Land of Jinn,” a groundbreaking supernatural horror film, marks the first cinematic collaboration between Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan. The narrative weaves a tale of ancient legends and personal quests, promising a chilling and culturally rich experience for audiences.

Supernatural Horror Unites Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan in 'The Land of Jinn'

In a significant cinematic milestone, the horror feature, “The Land of Jinn,” has emerged as the inaugural co-production between Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan. The film, directed by the visionary Kevin Rahardjo, known for his work on “Smothered,” was officially unveiled to the global film community at the prestigious Tokyo Gap-Financing Market on October 27, 2026. This collaboration bridges diverse cultural narratives, focusing on a compelling story inspired by mystical traditions.

The film’s plot follows a determined young Indonesian woman who embarks on a perilous journey to the remote, snow-clad mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Her mission: to find a legendary healer believed to possess the power to save her unborn child. Unbeknownst to her, this quest intertwines her child’s destiny with the ancient jinn, supernatural entities said to inhabit the region. The narrative is deeply rooted in the folklore surrounding King Solomon, who, according to legend, held command over these powerful spirits.

Renowned screenwriters Makbul Mubarak, acclaimed for “Autobiography,” and Tumpal Tampubolon, recognized for “Crocodile Tears,” are the creative minds behind the script. Director Rahardjo expressed his profound interest in the human desire for a “complete” life and how this aspiration can be explored through the lens of horror. He emphasized that the breathtaking yet harsh Kyrgyz landscape serves not merely as a backdrop but as a crucial element in the protagonist’s escalating obsession, echoing the indifference of nature to human struggles.

Filming for “The Land of Jinn” took place in the picturesque Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan and the bustling metropolis of Jakarta, Indonesia. The production features a trilingual script, incorporating English, Indonesian, and Kyrgyz, underscoring its international appeal and cultural authenticity. The film is currently in its post-production phase, with a global release anticipated in 2027.

Leading the production efforts are Yulia Evina Bhara and Amerta Kusuma from Jakarta-based KawanKawan Media, alongside Sultan Pirzhan, Elvira Sarieva of FreeMinds, and Maksat Bolotbek of Bairak Group from the Kyrgyz side. Bhara eloquently articulated the universal nature of fear and the localized presence of supernatural beings, stating, “Fear is universal, but ghosts are local.” She highlighted the shared belief in an unseen world within both cultures, noting the similar cautionary tales told to children about venturing out after the Maghrib prayer. Bhara humorously added that Indonesia, with its 17,000 islands, boasts 17,000 ghosts, while Kyrgyzstan’s mountains and steppes are home to their own unique jinn.

Bhara also pointed out the synergistic benefits of this international partnership. Kyrgyzstan offers a wealth of auteur talent, pristine natural landscapes, and access to the vast markets of Central Asia and Eurasia. Indonesia, in turn, brings a thriving horror film market, commanding a significant 65% local market share, and a proven track record for profitable genre productions.

Producer Elvira Sarieva hailed the project as an exceptional beginning for what she hopes will be a enduring creative alliance between Indonesian and Kyrgyz filmmakers. Nazira C. Noer, CEO and co-founder of Poplicist, a film marketing and publicity firm, also serves as a producer and delegate. Her firm has handled campaigns for notable films such as “Jumbo,” “Agak Laen,” and “Ghost in the Cell.” Noer is also the chief marketing officer for Navvaros Entertainment and holds the position of secretary general for the Indonesian Film Agency.

At the Tokyo market, the producers are actively seeking partners to finalize the film’s financing and secure distribution deals, aiming for pre-sales or a festival premiere route in 2027. Bhara envisions “The Land of Jinn” as a potential model for future Asian co-productions, showcasing the collaborative spirit and creative potential across the continent. Meanwhile, director Rahardjo is already looking ahead to his next venture, a creature feature set in a rural Indonesian village.

The Tokyo Gap-Financing Market is an integral part of TIFFCOM, the content market associated with the Tokyo International Film Festival, providing a vital platform for international film collaborations and market opportunities.

The emergence of 'The Land of Jinn' as the first co-production between Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan represents more than just a cinematic achievement; it signifies a powerful bridge between distinct cultures through the universal language of storytelling. This initiative inspires filmmakers globally to explore cross-border collaborations, proving that shared narratives and diverse talents can converge to create compelling art. It highlights the potential for lesser-known film industries to gain international recognition and for unique cultural mythologies to enrich the global cinematic landscape, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for diverse traditions. This venture is a testament to the idea that creativity knows no boundaries, encouraging future projects that celebrate cultural exchange and artistic innovation.
